Hi Whirinaki team Our rainforest walk was the highlight of
our trip to New Zealand. We wish we had done the 3 day walk, but
that will be for the next time. We have told everyone here of our
wonderful walk and our knowledgable guide and her delightful daughter
and of the beauty of the forest . Once again, thank you for the most
memorable highlight of our visit to your country. Sincerely, Judit
Farkas and Frank Detterbeck - United States.
Thank you to our guides. You
showed us that a rainforest is much more than a group of trees, or
even more than a micro-climate or endangered species habitat. To you
and your people, the forest is also a supermarket or grocery, a
pharmacy, a shelter, a churchyard - to you and your people, it’s
home. It’s life! Sharing that made us, distant tourists, feel
really appreciated and for the moment part of the culture of the
Children of the Mist. Arwi Klip and Riquette van de Pol,
The Netherlands.
Murumurunga marae was the
high point of my summer Semester at Sea experience. As the rangatira
(chief) of a group of faculty and students, I had the opportunity to
talk to the Maori community. While meeting the ‘Children of the
Mist’, as the people are called, I learned about their history and
culture, and their commitment to preserve both in the face of a
world that would have it otherwise. While walking through
their wonderful Whirinaki rainforest, I understood why they revere
it so, for it is there that the spirits of their ancestors
dwell. You could feel the spiritual power of the place,
admittedly a rather unusual sensation for a secular humanist such as
myself. Finally, while playing with the Maori children, I was
reminded that children are the same everywhere, so full of life and
hope, and that the future lies with them. Visiting the Maori
of the Whirinaki rainforest and marae was a privilege, as well
as a life-affirming experience. William Wei, Ph.D. Professor of
History, University of Colorado at Boulder
Thank you again for a most
memorable time at the Maori marae on our walk through the Whirinaki
Forest. Speaking for our small group I can say without
reservation that it was the highlight of our entire tour to
New Zealand Again, thank you for a most meaningful experience, and give my
best to all your team. Jerry and Mary Ellen Manock, United States
Hello Whirinaki Walks You
may not remember me, but I've rememberd you all. I was the guy who
loves to fish and kept on looking for trout in the river. We were
part of the Dutch group about one month ago. I had made you a
promise that I would send you a photo I made from that insect. Well,
here it is. Thanks again for a perfect day! I'll be hearing from
you. Milosj de Groot, The Netherlands
Hello there
In (begin of) December I
have had a trip to New Zealand...for three weeks ... and
I did the rainforest walk with you. I have taken a lot of
pictures and I know that you have asked for the fotos.. so
I’am a little bit late with giving you the pictures but now I hope
that my pictures are great and that you can use them. The trip
that I made with some of the other people of my trip was the 1
day walk. Say thx to Chris that helped me with de Maori
when I must speak to the Maori as the youngest guy of the Dutch
group. (Iwas very nurvus). Another day shitti day in paradise,
this was the words I remember most from you. I’m sorry I
am not so very good in my English on paper. With kind regards.
Erwin Smits , The Netherlands
Hello Do you remember us? The
two Danes who walked with you on the 7th of February with two
Chinese girls, one of them called Sunshu. We would very much like
to say to you how much we enjoyed the walk. It was an unforgettable
experience. Everything. The way you told us about your people. We
shall never forget it. The food, the nature, the culture! The rest
of our stay in NZ was just as wonderfull. We miss it - and you! If
we can do anything to help you getting known in Denmark, we will do!
Here are some photos! Many nose-kisses from Berit and
Dan
Hello all at the rainforest
walks Tonya and I have safely returned to New York City, but we
left our hearts in New Zealand! We had a wonderful time in
Australia and managed to avoid getting eaten, stung or gored by any
of their predators. Tonya did adore the koalas, but all in all
our time in New Zealand was our highlight! We thought of
you last week when we saw the film ‘Whale Rider’. If you
haven't seen it, do - it's a beautiful movie, and it does a great
job conveying many aspects of the Maori culture. We felt so
fortunate to have gained an understanding of that culture and
discussions with you. We're telling everyone we see how wonderful
our trip was, and especially the Whirinaki! If our friends and
family don't take our advice and experience it, then we'll have to
come back ourselves for the three day hike. All the best to
you. Chris Welch, US
The walk is exactly right for
oldies like us - not too strenuous and the guide kept up the right
pace. A good conversationalist, with excellent knowledge of Maori
tradition. Dennis Claridge, Britain.
See you in six years’ time
- with my daughters! Brian Jeppe, Denmark.
Beautiful scenery - loved the
lunch. Wonderful stories and Maori history. Neil (Auckland, NZ)
and Stephanie (United States)
The best way to get information
about nature, Maori culture and history. It is very good to have a
Maori guide and get the information directly about their culture.
Henriette Gere, Germany
Very informative. We learned very
much about Maori culture, native bush and conservation. We enjoyed
the walk and lunch very much! Thank you very much. Seiko
Liverside, Japan
Very special insight into a
beautiful forest and amazing culture. Thank you.
Antoinette Caird-Daley, England.
