OVERNIGHT MARAE
STAYS
Being welcomed onto a historic
marae, in the time-honoured manner of Maori tradition, is an
experience no-one forgets in a hurry. The karanga, or call of
welcome, is a chilling reminder of those who have passed before -
both for the manuhiri (visitors) and the tangata whenua, the people
of the land. Staying overnight in a carved wharenui (ancestral
meeting house) is also an experience to be cherished. In
collaboration with the tangata whenua, groups visiting the Whirinaki
rainforest and participating in walks with us can be hosted on one
of the marae of this area, including a sumptuous hangi (earth oven)
meal and interaction with the people who call this land their
home. This
experience is available to groups of eight or more only and is only
offered in conjunction with our
rainforest walks
programme.
